IPMAT Exam Guide
The Integrated Program in Management Aptitude Test (IPMAT) is a gateway for students aspiring to join the prestigious 5-year Integrated MBA programs offered by IIM Indore, IIM Rohtak, IIM Ranchi, and a few other leading institutes. Unlike CAT (for post-graduation), IPMAT is designed for students completing Class 12, making it a direct path to management education from undergraduate level.
This guide covers everything you need — from eligibility, syllabus, and exam pattern to preparation strategies, career pathways, and comparisons with other national-level entrance exams.

The IPMAT is more than an entrance exam — it is the foundation for a career in management, entrepreneurship, consulting, finance, and beyond. Students admitted through IPMAT to IIMs embark on a 5-year journey combining BBA + MBA. This saves them from preparing for multiple entrance exams later and provides early access to the IIM ecosystem, peer network, and corporate exposure.
By 2025, IPMAT graduates will be competing not just with MBA peers but also gaining an advantage of earlier industry entry, stronger internships, and dual degrees that make them highly employable across consulting, banking, FMCG, and start-ups.
2
The IPMAT pattern varies slightly by IIM, but the structure is broadly:
-
Quantitative Ability (MCQ + Short Answers)
-
Verbal Ability (Reading Comprehension, Grammar, Vocabulary)
At IIM Indore, the test has three sections:
-
Quantitative Ability (MCQs) – 40 mins
-
Quantitative Ability (Short Answer) – 40 mins
-
Verbal Ability – 40 mins
Each correct answer fetches +4 marks, and each incorrect answer gets -1 (MCQs only).
The syllabus covers Class 10–12 level mathematics, reading comprehension, logical reasoning, and basic verbal skills.
3
A winning strategy for IPMAT combines:
-
Concept Clarity: Revise Class 9–12 math thoroughly (algebra, arithmetic, calculus basics).
-
Practice Daily: Solve RC passages, vocabulary drills, and logical puzzles.
-
Mock Tests: Take at least 15–20 full-length mocks to improve speed and accuracy.
-
PI & WAT Prep: Shortlisted students face personal interviews and written ability tests; communication and general awareness are critical here.
Balancing school board exams with IPMAT prep is challenging — hence, time management is your biggest ally.
4
-
Versus JEE (Engineering): IPMAT is less calculation-heavy, more reasoning-focused.
-
Versus CLAT (Law): IPMAT has higher-level math; CLAT emphasizes GK and legal aptitude.
-
Versus CUET (UG Programs): IPMAT is far more competitive due to fewer seats and higher skill thresholds.
-
Versus CAT: IPMAT tests similar skills but at a level tailored to high school graduates.
Overall, IPMAT sits between CUET and CAT in terms of difficulty — demanding strong fundamentals but not as advanced as post-graduate entrance exams.
